August 2022 Flush Ink Productions sent playwright Taylor Marie Graham to an old factory in St. Jacob’s, Ontario, to write for 22 hours. The result was Taylor came out of that night with a new one act thriller: Corporate Finch!
“I was alone, I was scared, and I started to imagine two teenagers breaking in . . . I spent the night imagining what they would do to scare each other so I wouldn’t be scared myself!”
“I spent some time researching the history of St. Jacob’s and even listened to some Mennonite church hymns at 3am in the morning which both made it into the play by morning.”
Paddy Gillard-Bentley, Flush Ink’s producer, sent Taylor to write with snacks and treats and a deadline. What Taylor ended up writing even creeped her out a little, so she was a little hesitant to press send.
“I put a lot of my own worries and fears into this script. It all sort of poured out of me.”
By 6pm that evening, Corporate Finch was alive and kicking out of Taylor to meet Paddy who read her and declared the script one of the three winners of the write or flight event. This meant that Corporate Finch would receive a workshop production later that year at Unhinged Fest in Kitchener, Ontario.
